Herrin's Riverside Bed and
Breakfast
Cherokee owned and operated. Member of the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce.
Come and visit the Cherokee Nation and stay with us in our Bed and
Breakfast. We now have two locations; our original location on the
bank of the beautiful Illinois River three miles east of Tahlequah,
Oklahoma, and our new location on a peaceful wooded acreage near the Cherokee Heritage Center, three miles south of Tahlequah. We call
our location by the river, Amayuldi (Ah-mah-yule-dee: By the Water) and our
new location, Anijina (Ah-nee-jee-nah: The Cedars). Amayuldi has two B & B units; the
Fishing Cabin,
and the Apartment. Both were originally
built in the 1930's and have been recently remodeled. Both are
completely modern and air conditioned. We furnish your bedding,
towels, range, microwave, refrigerator, coffee pot, dishes, cookware,
utensils, TV, and VCR.
Anijina has only one unit, the
Cedar House. It was built by Al
and his friend, Charlie Johnson in 1977-78. They framed the Cedar
House entirely from oak and covered it with cedar boards. The Cedar
House is completely modern with central heat and air conditioning and wood
burning fireplace. We furnish your bedding, towels, range, microwave,
refrigerator, coffee pot, dishes, cookware, utensils, TV, and VCR.
The Fishing Cabin The Fishing Cabin was originally
built as a retreat for enjoying the fishing, swimming and boating in the
Illinois River. We have preserved that theme in the decor of the
Cabin. As our guest, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the river from
every room and fish or swim from our private river frontage.

As our guest, you can fish or swim from our private river frontage.

The Cedar House
The Cedar House is located on twenty wooded acres, which we call
Anijina (The Cedars). It was part of the original Cherokee allotment
of Frankie's Grandmother. Anijina is located at historic Park Hill,
which was the center of the Cherokee renaissance after the Trail of
Tears as well as the cultural and political center of the Cherokee
Nation today.
|
 |
The front porch of the Cedar House is a perfect place to
listen to Cherokee stories, watch wildlife in the surrounding woods, or
listen to whip-poor-wills and owls on a warm summer evening.
Frankie's Grandmother said the Yvwi Junasdi (Yuh-wee Jew-nah-sdee;
Little People) dance in these woods at night. |
|
|
|
The majestic cedar
trees of Anijina create an atmosphere of peace and healing. The
cedar tree is a sacred tree of the Cherokees, and some people can sense
the presence of the Cherokee Spirits among the cedars. As our
guest in the Cedar House, you can enjoy the flora, fauna, and
sometimes, the
spirits of the
Cherokee Nation on a quiet private walk or take a guided instructional walk
on Anijina or to the Illinois River which is about a mile away. We
often share stories of our Cherokee culture and heritage with our guests on the
front porch or around an evening campfire in the cedars.

The beautiful
Cedar House can accommodate up to seven people. It
has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room with wood-burning
fireplace and Dish-Network TV, dining room, full kitchen, and laundry
room with washer and dryer. Large porches extend across the front
and back of the house, from which guests can watch the birds and other
wildlife while relaxing with a cup of coffee.

museum and gift shop, and the world famous Trail of Tears Drama
presented in the spectacular open-air amphitheatre. The Tribal
Complex for the Cherokee Nation, including the offices of the Chief,
Deputy Chief, Tribal Council, and many of the services of the Cherokee
Nation, such as genealogy research and tribal registration, are located
a short distance from Anijina. The Cherokee Casino and the Casino of
the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokees are each located about three
miles from Anijina.

Our breakfast includes coffee, teas, orange juice, milk, cereals, fruits,
yogurt, sweet-rolls and sausage/egg/biscuits. If you prefer that we
not furnish breakfast, we can give
you a discount of 15% on the cost of your stay. Please let us
know when you make your reservation and we will adjust your charges
accordingly. All three units have facilities for cooking your own
meals, if you wish. There are grocery stores, good restaurants and fast food
places a short drive away. The Restaurant of the Cherokees, located in
the Tribal Complex, has excellent food and is a popular meeting place for
Cherokee artists, writers, political leaders, and all other Cherokees and visitors to the Cherokee Nation.
We regret that, because of some unfortunate encounters between pets and some
of our local wildlife, we can no longer allow pets. Also, we do not
allow smoking inside any of our units. We ask our guests who smoke to
smoke outside on the porches and to be careful with cigarettes in the
surrounding woods.
Parents must be responsible for their children. The river and woods
are natural, wild areas which can be hazardous to children without proper
supervision. We love children, but our primary focus is on adults.
Parents should realize that young children, and some teen-agers, may not be
entertained by our peaceful setting and Cherokee culture and history.
Bored, unruly children can ruin a vacation for parents and other guests
seeking peaceful, quiet reflection and recreation.
